Accreditation

The New Sewickley Township Police Department has become the first Accredited police department in Beaver County.

The New Sewickley Township Police Department is proud to announce that we remain the only Accredited Law Enforcement Agency in Beaver County. On Tuesday July 25, 2023 Pennsylvania Chief’s of Police and the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Board unanimously agreed to re-approve our accredited status, which was originally attained in 2020. The members of the police department have worked long and hard to meet the standards of policing which are required for a law enforcement agency to be approved and accredited.

Did you know that there are approximately 1,200 Law Enforcement Agencies in Pennsylvania? Of those 1,200 agencies, approximately 10 % or only 120 agencies meet the Pennsylvania Chief’s Of Police Standards for Professional Law Enforcement practices. Obtaining the approved accredited status does not simply mean that a department has policies and procedures which meet the standards. The agency must also prove that they meet and practice these standards on a daily basis.

What is Accreditation?

The Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association introduced the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Program to the Commonwealth in July 2001. Since then, over 300 agencies have enrolled and 120 agencies currently have attained accredited status.

Accreditation is a progressive and time-proven way of helping institutions evaluate and improve their overall performance. The cornerstone of this strategy lies in the promulgation of standards containing a clear statement of professional objectives. Participating administrators then conduct a thorough analysis to determine how existing operations can be adapted to meet these objectives. When the procedures are in place, a team of independent professionals is assigned to verify that all applicable standards have been successfully implemented. The process culminates with a decision by an authoritative body that the institution is worthy of accreditation.

The Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Program was designed and developed by professional law enforcement executives to provide a reasonable and cost effective plan for the professionalization of law enforcement agencies within the Commonwealth. The underlying philosophy of the program is to have a user-friendly undertaking for the departments that will result in a “success” oriented outcome.

Why Does Accreditation Matter?

  1. Establishes a credible framework for evaluating agency practices and procedures
  2. Reduces agency risk and exposure to lawsuits
  3. Decreases some liability insurance expenditures
  4. Improves law enforcement – community relations
  5. Increases employee input, interaction and confidence in the agency
  6. Enlarges the outlook and viewpoints of managers, officers and employees
  7. Identifies and highlights the capabilities and competence of the agency
  8. Furnishes a solid foundation for the agency to build upon for further progress
  9. Provides reliable methods to improve essential management procedures
  10. Extends agency accountability to the public and elected officials
  11. Enhances planning and innovative activities by all agency personnel
  12. Develops improved methods for providing services to the community
  13. Encourages problem-solving activities within the agency
